RVC Celebrates Downtown West Opening
Rock Valley College (RVC) officially opened its new Downtown West Campus on Friday, August 14, with a ribbon-cutting celebration attended by over 350 people, including college leaders, employees, community partners and members of the community.
Community members explored the Downtown Learning Center building with the Early Childhood Education Center.
Located at 315 S. Winnebago Street in downtown Rockford, Downtown West expands RVC鈥檚 presence in the city and brings education and workforce training opportunities closer to adult learners and community members.
Dr. Spearman welcomed the community to the Downtown West campus one day before classes were scheduled to start. 鈥淭he campus will serve as an extension of the college's education core. It is one of the ways that we are living out our mission to empower students and community through lifelong learning.鈥�
The new campus features programs designed to meet the needs of students and the regional workforce, including Automotive Technology, Collision Repair, Truck Driver Training, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Human Services and Adult Education.
The Automotive Technology program includes training in electric and gas engine repair, while Collision Repair prepares students for careers in automotive refinishing and repair.
The opening marked the culmination of a project that began with RVC鈥檚 groundbreaking ceremony on March 27, 2025. Nearly 100 employees, stakeholders and community partners attended the groundbreaking, which marked the beginning of the college鈥檚 vision for a new campus in the heart of Rockford.
As Winnebago County Board Chairman, Joe Chiarelli helped facilitate RVC鈥檚 purchase of the property that became Downtown West. The sale of 720 Chestnut Street helped serve as a catalyst for the Downtown West project. "This is more than just a new campus, it's a transformative investment in education, workforce development, and the revitalization of downtown Rockford. I'm proud Winnebago County played a role from the very beginning."
Downtown West was designed not only to provide classrooms and career training but also to include community spaces that further connect RVC with downtown Rockford.
For students, the campus represents an investment in access and opportunity. By bringing programs closer to where people live and work, RVC is helping remove barriers that can make pursuing higher education and workforce training difficult.
The ribbon cutting also marked the launch of the Rock Valley College Foundation鈥檚 Campaign for Access and Opportunity, a $2.5 million fundraising campaign supporting scholarships for students attending Downtown West. The campaign has already surpassed its original goal, with 55 donors contributing more than $3 million and counting.
鈥淲ith an original goal to raise $2.5 million in scholarship support for programs housed within RVC Downtown West and beyond, I鈥檓 thrilled to share that 55 generous donors have surpassed that goal by bringing our current total raised to $3 million and counting,鈥� said Brittany Freiberg, chief development officer of the RVC Foundation.
Freiberg said the scholarship support will help students take advantage of the opportunities available at Downtown West. 鈥淏ecause of our donors鈥� selfless giving, the doors to Downtown West now represent doors of opportunity."
During the celebration, guests had the opportunity to tour the new campus, learn more about the programs offered at Downtown West and connect with RVC faculty and staff. The event also featured food from downtown vendors and giveaways.
The opening of Downtown West represents another step in RVC鈥檚 commitment to education, workforce development and community partnerships throughout the region.
Dr. Spearman hopes the space will go beyond a traditional college campus, with the goal to bring in anyone and everyone ready to further their education. 鈥淲e want to really cater or encourage all students, but especially the adult learner, we want the adult learner to feel inspired and supported to start a career or explore a new career here at RVC.鈥�
鈥淪ome students will walk through these doors knowing exactly where they are headed. Others will walk through still searching for their path. But every one of them will enter a campus built to remind them that opportunity at RVC belongs to them, too.鈥�
